I had to learn English as quickly as possible to be able to assimilate. While it helped me be successful in school, I had to sacrifice my Spanish speaking skills and in some ways identity with my culture. The dual language program at Becker has helped us not repeat the same mistake with our daughter. He applied and was accepted as a transfer, and he is thriving - a straight-A student on the honor roll, taking two high school credit courses and has developed a strong community with his peers and teachers. For us, it is critical that students be able to complete the highest grade they are in before facing any school transition. Disrupting students mid-program undermines both academic progress and the relationships they’ve built with teachers and friends. We believe maintaining continuity is the best use of AISD resources to support student success. Looking ahead, we also want to advocate for our youngest, as well. We chose to move from NYC to ýapp because we fell in love with Becker Elementary and wanted our kids to be part of a wall-to-wall Spanish dual-language program. Language is a top-priority for our biracial family and Becker has delivered on that since day one. Another bonus is the wonderful education they receive in school's Green Garden program (with an adjacent chicken coop and bees), where every class in the school has their own plot - immersing in nature, learning about science, and nutrition. No public or private school in our former NYC neighborhood could compete with Becker and no other school in AISD can replicate this special space. I went to Metz Elementary and my parents were AISD teachers. My own daughter, who has dyslexia, is now reading on grade level because of the support she has received there. These successes demonstrate Becker’s value as a school where equity and excellence meet. It is also important to note that AISD has recently invested in security upgrades at Becker to ensure student safety. I’ve toured various AISD schools…some you try to get a tour at…and they don’t offer it, no one responds. Some of these programs like wall to wall have systems in place for example for tours. There are many other AISD schools that on paper offer two way but the leadership does not engage with the community to showcase their school. School leaders don’t take their jobs to become marketers…they care about kids. Consider that the basic allotment was only increased by $55 dollars.
